The third volume in Wilson's "Lampitt Papers" sequence is just as engaging and entertaining as the first two Incline Our Hearts and A Bottle in the Smoke. The entire work is proving to be a roman à fleuve of brilliant social and historical sweep--a high comedic romp through our times. This latest installment brings Julian Ramsay, now in his 40s, into the Sixties, when he's still working as a radio actor and fearing himself a failure. Julian and his cousin Felicity share a house in London, where she works as a civil servant, having abandoned academic philosophy. Through a series of coincidences, they both fall under the spell of one Rice Robey, a latter-day mystic and Blakean visionary who once wrote some novels under the name "Albion Pugh."

This is the third of five novels in the Lampitt series: (1) Incline Our Hearts, (2) A Bottle in the Smoke, (3) Daughters of Albion, (4) Hearing Voices, and (5) A Watch in the Night. The series chronicles the life of Julian Ramsay, born in England in the mid-twentieth century, and his entanglements with various members of the Lampitt family, including author James "Jimbo" Lampitt, and Jimbo's biographer. I enjoyed the first two and would recommend them, but I couldn't get into this third installment.I also highly recommend Wilson's The Vicar of Sorrows and The Healing Art.

Together with the four other novels in this series this forms a roman fleuve like Proust's Remembrance of Things
Past, but set in England and the USA later. The characters are like Proust's bizarre but almost convincing (I don't think either Proust or Wilson wanted readers to be entirely convinced any more than Dickens did. The prose is excellent.
